Parallel 2: Technology and cross-cultural communication for health

With the growing number of content creators around the world and the growing popularity of video-sharing sites, video creation, sharing, and following have become a daily channel for many creators and followers to share and access information. At the same time, the rapid development of China’s economy and the profoundness of its culture has attracted more and more foreigners to study, work and live in China. In this context, foreign content creators in China are gaining more and more attention on Chinese social media platforms. Bilibili (B Site), the most popular video-sharing platform among young people in China, has a group of channels for foreign content creators with a large number of followers.

During the global epidemic of COVID-19, and as the Western media continues to raise different voices about China’s epidemic prevention and control measures, these foreign content creators in China are documenting what they see and feel about living in China through their audio-visual productions. In this paper, five channels of foreign content creators in China with a high number of followers on B Site are selected. Using their videos about China’s epidemic prevention and control as the main subject of the study, the content analysis method was adopted, using Narrative Research and the Other as the theoretical framework to further explore the narrative characteristics and narrative logic of foreign content creators in China in producing videos related to the theme of China’s epidemic prevention and control, as well as their modes and patterns of expression. By analyzing the titles, themes, cover images, likes, and danmu (“bullet curtain”) further understand their communication strategies and effects. This will provide an insight into the epidemic prevention and control in China as seen by foreign content creators in China.
