Parallel 1: Public engagement in environment, science, risk and health

This work investigates the perceptions and practices in the communication and mobilization of knowledge, of a group of leaders of Social and Human Sciences projects in the Faculty of Human Sciences of the National University of San Luis. The qualitative questionnaires to the project managers were carried out during the year 2020 and 2021.

There is a need for researchers, research funders and policymakers to make scientific research more accessible to the public and to involve a wide range of public groups in the processes of science. The communication of science, scientific dissemination and dissemination of knowledge, aims to translate existing academic work (publications) into other texts that use linguistic repertoires adjusted to a non-academic public to democratize the reception of academic knowledge. Meanwhile, the mobilization of knowledge demands that the knowledge produced in the university environment be ready to be used and transferred to society through planned processes that last over time. The investigation showed scarce and almost null practices in both conceptions by the research groups, with a certain pre-eminence to the approach of the postulates of the social communication of science.

In the first place, we ask ourselves the question of knowing the social researchers of the university, what they believe to be the role and social action of teacher-researchers in the communicational and social use of knowledge. The linking of the social communication of science, mobile science and politicized science, make up a conceptual triad here initially investigated by the practices of the research groups of the Faculty of Human Sciences of the UNSL. Through the answers of the researchers to the qualitative questionnaire carried out, the use of knowledge produced within the university, its preparation and its usefulness by other users and the community are described, and their probable approaches to some of these three paradigms in tension are pointed out. such as the social communication of science, mobile science and politicized science. They are the CSC, the CM and the CP. Second, we seek to describe what are the most common practices of promotion and dissemination of scientific knowledge. Third, within the framework of the Faculty of Human Sciences of the UNSL in the period 2009-2019, based on the practices of promotion and dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Regarding the strategies of the research professors on the dissemination of knowledge, the majority of the professors chose publication in specialized magazines (77.8%), then dissemination in media of general interest (14.8%) and the rest of the responses (7.4%) was divided between the options of external seminars and activities with educational and/or social organizations in the community. Publishing in specialized academic journals constitutes a vigorous mission of research projects and is one of their last steps. Research projects lend a relevant interest to the publication of their contributions in scientific journals (92.6%), secondly, to events and congresses whose themes are related to the theme of the project (88.9%).
