[Purposes] It is disputive that whether open peer review is available to improve the quality of reviews so far, and thus whether it can improve the impact of articles is even more difficult to determine in the current context. The study explores whether open peer review can bring the raise of the impact of articles, but also compares the impact of open peer review in professional and non-specialist areas.

[Methods] The study selects Nature Communications as a case study and collects data via Python on citations and metrics of its total 31,042 articles from January 2016 to December 31, 2021. Meanwhile, the effect of publication time on article impact has been eliminated through LM linear regression function as well as add_residuals function.

[Findings] It is found that the citations of closed peer review articles in Nature Communications journals was significantly higher than that of open peer review articles, while opposite for metrics. [Conclusions] Given that articles are mostly cited by researchers and social media and mainstream news media are the main sources of metrics, open peer review may have a greater impact on publics than professional fields. In other words, public may value open peer review more than professional fields.
